Hidden Springs & Highland Forests
11 Nights / 12 Days
From £4,385 per person*
Taipei & Wulai (2) → Guanziling (2) → Alishan (2) → Guguan (2) → Sun Moon Lake (2) → Taipei (1)
Step off the tourist trail and into a gentler rhythm of discovery. This 12-day journey blends Taiwan’s rich Indigenous culture, misty forest trails, and little-known hot spring towns — from Wulai’s riverside retreats to Alishan’s sacred sunrise peaks, and from mud bath rituals in Guanziling to the serenity of Sun Moon Lake. A perfect trip for curious travellers seeking healing waters, mountain beauty, and quiet cultural depth.
Taipei
Taiwan’s capital is a city of contrasts: night markets filled with sizzling street food, quiet temples scented with incense, and glass towers like Taipei 101 piercing the skyline. Wellness flows into urban life here, with Japanese-style bathhouses, rooftop spas, and nearby hot spring suburbs such as Beitou offering restorative soaks. Between dumpling feasts and tea houses, travellers can slip easily from city buzz into mountain trails just beyond the edge of town. Taipei is modern, lively, and deeply rooted in tradition — a cultural hub with hot springs at its heart.
Wulai
Just south of Taipei, Wulai is a riverside village where steaming hot springs meet Atayal indigenous culture. Bathhouses and outdoor pools line the river, while waterfalls cascade through forested hills. Wooden bridges, cable cars, and local craft stalls give the town a traditional feel, while the mineral waters remain the main draw. Wulai is both close to the capital and deeply rooted in its own heritage — a retreat shaped by water and forest.
Alishan
High in the central mountains, Alishan is famed for misty forests, sunrise views, and ancient cypress groves. The Alishan Forest Railway winds through tea plantations and towering trees, creating one of Taiwan’s most scenic journeys. While not a spa town, the wellness here comes from crisp air, tea culture, and mountain calm. Alishan feels timeless and mythic — a retreat where nature itself is the restorative force.
Guguan
In the hills east of Taichung, Guguan has been a hot spring retreat for over a century. The waters are silky and clear, piped into riverside pools, hotels, and public baths. Surrounded by forested slopes, it’s a favourite escape for city dwellers seeking rest in nature. Local legend says the springs bring fertility, adding a touch of folklore to the experience. Guguan is intimate, relaxed, and closely tied to the mountain landscape around it.
Sun Moon Lake
Taiwan’s largest lake is a place of tranquil beauty, where forested hills frame turquoise waters that shift with the light. Cycling paths and boat cruises reveal its curves, while temples and pagodas dot the shoreline. Spa hotels and bathhouses draw on local springs, offering soaks with lake views. Between indigenous culture, tea plantations, and sunrise walks, Sun Moon Lake carries a meditative rhythm — a balance of water, mountain, and tradition.
Day 1. Arrive in Taipei & Travel to Wulai
Arrive in bustling Taipei and transfer south to Wulai, a riverside village surrounded by forested hills. Settle into a hot spring inn perched above the Nanshi River, where private baths and soft mountain air welcome you. In the evening, wander Wulai Old Street, sample Atayal millet wine, and watch steam rise from the riverbanks as dusk sets in.
Day 2. Forest Walks & Waterfall Soaks in Wulai
Spend the morning hiking through misty trails toward Wulai Waterfall, then ride the historic scenic mini train for forest views. Visit a local Atayal weaving studio or small museum to learn about Taiwan’s Indigenous culture. Later, enjoy a riverside soak or a private bath back at your inn, followed by traditional stone-grilled river fish for dinner.
Day 3. South to Guanziling & Taiwan’s Famous Mud Springs
Depart Taipei by high-speed train to Tainan, then transfer into the hills to Guanziling, famed for its warm mud springs. Check into a hillside retreat and enjoy your first therapeutic soak in grey mineral-rich waters. In the evening, sample local cuisine cooked over geothermal heat — including spring-boiled eggs and herbal clay-pot stews.
Day 4. Flaming Springs & Mountain Scenery
Explore Guanziling’s unique Water and Fire Cave, where a natural gas flame burns above trickling spring water. Visit Baihe Reservoir or nearby lotus ponds for a peaceful afternoon stroll. Return to your hotel for another mud soak or a traditional herbal steam, followed by a dinner of slow-cooked Taiwanese specialties.
Day 5. Scenic Drive into the Alishan Highlands
Journey into the cool mountain air of Alishan, winding through tea-covered slopes and cloud forests. Stop at a high-mountain tea farm to learn about Taiwan’s famous oolong, then continue to your cedarwood inn or mountain lodge. Relax with a warming meal and stargaze in the crisp mountain air.
Day 6. Alishan Sunrise & Sacred Cedar Paths
Rise early for the iconic Alishan sunrise, taking the narrow-gauge forest railway to a panoramic viewing platform. Afterward, walk quiet forest trails past thousand-year-old cedars, mountain shrines, and lakes ringed by mist. The afternoon is free for tea tasting, gentle walking, or a rest before dinner.
Day 7. Mountain Descent & Onward to Guguan
Descend through mountain valleys to the secluded hot spring village of Guguan, nestled deep in central Taiwan’s highlands. Settle into a traditional inn where forest-facing baths and quiet surrounds invite deep relaxation. Enjoy a rustic local dinner and a night soak under the stars.
Day 8. Forest Trails & Quiet Baths in Guguan
Choose one of the Seven Heroes of Guguan hiking trails — a network of well-marked paths ranging from gentle forest walks to more ambitious ridge hikes — offering sweeping views over cedar-clad hills and bamboo groves. Afterwards, return to your traditional inn for a long afternoon soak in a riverside or open-air bath. In the evening, enjoy a locally sourced dinner featuring highland vegetables
Day 9 – To Sun Moon Lake: Scenic Beauty & Spa Serenity
Travel west toward Sun Moon Lake, stopping at viewpoints as the valley opens into sweeping water views. Check into a lakeside retreat with spa access, then enjoy a leisurely cruise across the lake or a stroll along its scenic cycling path. End the day with a hot spring soak and peaceful views from your room or terrace.
Day 10. Temples, Teahouses & Lakeside Calm
Spend the morning visiting Wenwu Temple, perched above the lake, and browsing lakeside tea shops for aged oolong and handmade ceramics. Visit the Ita Thao Village along the lake’s southeastern shore, the cultural heart of the Thao people - here you can learn about their legends, traditional weaving, and way of life shaped by the rhythms of the lake. In the afternoon, choose between a tranquil boat ride across the water, a lakeside cycle along the scenic Xiangshan trail, or a quiet hour in your room’s private bath.
Day 11. Return to Taipei & Final Wellness Fix
Travel by high-speed rail back to Taipei for your final night. Treat yourself to a luxury spa treatment, rooftop onsen, or stylish afternoon tea in the Da’an district. Enjoy a farewell dinner in a modern Taiwanese bistro or revisit one of the city’s iconic night markets for a final round of street food.
Day 12. Depart from Taipei
After a final breakfast, your private transfer whisks you to the airport for your onward journey. You’ll leave Taiwan with softened shoulders, a quiet mind, and memories steeped in steam, forest, and ancient spring traditions.
