Thermal Taiwan
10 Nights / 11 Days
From £3,230 per person
Taipei (2) → Jiaoxi (2) → Taroko Gorge (2) → Taitung (2) → Taipei (2)
From steamy city springs and night markets to cliffside jungle tubs and marble gorges, this soulful journey flows through Taiwan’s volcanic heart, across tea-scented mountains and through two naitonal parks, all linked by one of Asia’s most scenic rail routes
Taipei
Taiwan’s capital is a city of contrasts: night markets filled with sizzling street food, quiet temples scented with incense, and glass towers like Taipei 101 piercing the skyline. Wellness flows into urban life here, with Japanese-style bathhouses, rooftop spas, and nearby hot spring suburbs such as Beitou offering restorative soaks. Between dumpling feasts and tea houses, travellers can slip easily from city buzz into mountain trails just beyond the edge of town. Taipei is modern, lively, and deeply rooted in tradition — a cultural hub with hot springs at its heart.
Beitou
Just a short ride from central Taipei, Beitou is a neighbourhood built around steaming hot springs. Its history stretches back to Japanese rule, with elegant bathhouses, wooden ryokan, and even a thermal valley where sulphurous steam rises straight from the earth. Today, Beitou blends tradition with modern spa hotels, offering everything from rustic public baths to private luxury pools. The Hot Springs Museum, housed in a former bathhouse, tells the story of the town’s past, while leafy parks and tea houses add calm between soaks. Beitou feels both accessible and atmospheric — a place where city life gives way to the timeless ritual of bathing.
Jiaoxi
On Taiwan’s northeast coast, Jiaoxi is famed for hot springs that bubble up in hotels, parks, and even footbath corners along the streets. The waters are gentle and clear, perfect after exploring nearby waterfalls or cycling the coastal roads. Local delicacies — from green onion pancakes to spring-water poached eggs — tie food into the bathing experience. Jiaoxi feels welcoming and easy-going, a town where hot springs are simply part of everyday rhythm.
Taroko Gorge
Taroko Gorge is Taiwan’s most dramatic landscape, a marble canyon where turquoise rivers cut between soaring cliffs. Trails wind past shrines, tunnels, and suspension bridges, offering endless views of rock, water, and forest. Bathing comes in the form of natural riverside pools and mountain hot springs, often reached by short hikes. The gorge blends raw spectacle with moments of calm, a place where nature itself feels like a temple.
Taitung
Facing the Pacific Ocean, Taitung carries a slower rhythm — coastal hot springs, surf beaches, and indigenous culture shaping its identity. Outdoor baths overlook the sea, while inland valleys brim with rice paddies and forests. The city hosts festivals of music and balloons, while the coast reveals hidden coves and island ferries. Taitung is restorative and authentic, a meeting point of ocean horizons and mountain traditions.
Day 1. Arrive in Taipei & Evening Soak in Beitou
Arrive in Taipei and transfer to Beitou, the city’s historic hot spring district. Check in to a boutique hotel or heritage ryokan, where a private spring bath offers a relaxing welcome. Soak in the mineral-rich waters at Beitou Public Bathhouse or in your room, then stroll through the steamy Thermal Valley at dusk. In the evening, head to Shilin Night Market for street food favourites like scallion pancakes and hot spring eggs.
Day 2. Volcano Trails & Tea with a View
Spend the day in Yangmingshan National Park, exploring volcanic trails past bubbling vents and misty grasslands. Walk the scenic paths at Lengshuikeng or Qingtiangang before heading to Maokong by gondola. There, enjoy a traditional Taiwanese tea ceremony in a quiet hillside teahouse with views over the Taipei Basin. Return to Beitou for an evening soak and a local meal.
Day 3. Coastal Train to Jiaoxi & Private Stone Soak
Board a scenic local train as it curves along the Pacific coastline toward Jiaoxi, a popular hot spring town in Yilan County. Check into a hotel with your own private stone bath. Spend the afternoon exploring thermal footpaths, then unwind in your room or visit the public baths before an optional visit to the Luodong Night Market
Day 4. Waterfall Trails & Local Eats in Jiaoxi
Start your morning with a walk to Wufengqi Waterfall, a three-tiered cascade tucked into the green hills above town. Afterwards, hop on a rented bike and pedal through nearby rice fields, taking in the quiet rhythms of rural Yilan. In the afternoon, visit the Lanyang Museum to learn about the region’s volcanic geology and cultural heritage. Finish your day at Tangweigou Hot Spring Park, where you can sample local street food delicacies cooked with hot spring water — think ramen, soft-boiled eggs, and steamed buns with a mineral twist.
Day 5. Into the Mountains: Taroko Gorge
Travel by rail and road to Taroko Gorge, one of Taiwan’s most stunning natural wonders. Check into a tranquil guesthouse on the edge of the national park. Stretch your legs on the Shakadang Trail or visit the Eternal Spring Shrine before a peaceful dinner surrounded by mountains.
Day 6. Wild Springs & Waterfall Hikes
Today is a chance to discover one of the gorge’s best-kept secrets: wild hot springs hidden along mountain streams. Join a local guide for a short hike to a remote riverside pool, where you can soak in geothermal water surrounded by moss-covered cliffs. Later, visit Baiyang Waterfall Trail or enjoy a guided nature walk.
Day 7. Taroko to Taitung: Forest Soaks by the Sea
Journey down the dramatic east coast to Zhiben, a lesser-known hot spring town near Taitung. Bathe in sulphur-rich springs with views of the Pacific, and settle into a quiet forest lodge. Spend the evening learning about indigenous Amis culture, or simply relax under the stars in an outdoor tub.
Day 8. Forest Trails & Indigenous Villages
Explore Jhihben National Forest Recreation Area, home to ancient banyan trees and quiet walking paths. Visit a local indigenous village or craft center, or book a massage using herbal blends unique to Taiwan’s eastern tribes. Enjoy a final soak with birdsong and sea air.
Day 9. Scenic Return to Taipei via Hualien
Take a scenic rail journey back up the coast to Taipei, watching cliffs drop into the sea along one of Taiwan’s most beautiful train lines. On arrival, check into a luxury hotel with spa facilities or enjoy one last soak at a day spa before your final night in the city.
Day 10. Depart Taipei
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and private airport transfer. Depart Taiwan feeling calm, nourished, and inspired by a land where hot springs, heritage, and nature flow as one.
