    Fukuoka

Kyushu’s lively gateway city, Fukuoka blends urban energy with coastal ease. Its bustling food scene is legendary — steaming bowls of tonkotsu ramen served from open-air yatai stalls are part of the city’s nightly rhythm. Shinto shrines and seaside parks offer calm between lively shopping streets and galleries. As a starting point for Kyushu, Fukuoka pairs cosmopolitan comfort with the warmth of a regional capital, a place where local traditions sit naturally alongside modern creativity.

    Beppu

With plumes of steam rising from its hillsides, Beppu is Japan’s onsen capital. The city boasts thousands of hot spring vents feeding bathhouses, sand baths, and mud pools, as well as the dramatic “Hells of Beppu” — vividly coloured geothermal ponds that showcase nature’s raw power. Between soaks, stroll along seaside promenades or ride the ropeway up Mount Tsurumi for sweeping views across Oita Bay. Beppu’s mix of spectacle and relaxation has made it one of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns for centuries.

    Kurokawa

Tucked into forested mountains, Kurokawa is a village where bathing feels like stepping back in time. Thatched inns and wooden bridges line a riverside path, with outdoor rotenburo hidden among boulders, bamboo, and trees. The town’s unique onsen-hopping pass invites travellers to wander from bath to bath, each with its own character. By night, lanterns glow along the narrow streets, and the sound of the river accompanies seasonal kaiseki dinners. Intimate and atmospheric, Kurokawa embodies the charm of rural Japan’s onsen culture.

    Unzen

Perched in the mountains of Nagasaki Prefecture, Unzen is a spa town built around volcanic landscapes. The Unzen Jigoku (“hells”) hiss with steam and sulphur, once used as a Buddhist training ground for monks seeking endurance. Today, travellers soak in the mineral-rich waters that these hot springs supply, known for their healing properties. Hiking trails weave through the Unzen-Amakusa National Park, offering views of volcanic peaks, while the town itself mixes retro bathhouses with elegant ryokan escapes.

    Ibusuki

On Kyushu’s southern tip, Ibusuki is famed for its unique sand baths, where guests are gently buried in naturally heated black sand by the seaside. The warmth soothes muscles and improves circulation, offering a form of relaxation found nowhere else in Japan. The town also has traditional hot spring baths and access to scenic Kagoshima Bay, with Mount Kaimon rising like a perfect cone in the distance. Sun, sea, and sand blend here into a restorative coastal ritual.

    Kirishima

Surrounded by volcanic peaks and crater lakes, Kirishima Onsen is a mountain retreat steeped in myth and mineral water. The area’s steaming outdoor baths are fed by multiple spring sources, each with subtly different qualities, from sulphuric to clear carbonated waters. It’s also tied to Japan’s creation legends: nearby Takachiho-gawara is where the gods are said to have descended to earth. Between soaks, hike the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park or enjoy the misty views from a hillside ryokan balcony.

    Day 1. Arrive in Fukuoka

Begin your journey in Fukuoka, Kyushu’s energetic gateway city. After arriving at the airport or Hakata Station, check in to your comfortable city hotel and take time to rest or explore the area on foot. You might stretch your legs with a stroll through the calm grounds of Kushida Shrine or enjoy a coffee along the riverside near the vibrant Hakata Canal City. In the evening, sample Fukuoka’s famous tonkotsu ramen at a local yatai food stall and settle into the relaxed rhythm of the region.

    Day 2. Fukuoka → Beppu

This morning, travel east to Beppu, a hot spring town like no other, known for its extraordinary geothermal landscape and deep-rooted bathing traditions. After settling in, explore the otherworldly "hells" of Beppu—colourful boiling ponds and steaming vents that showcase the island’s volcanic energy. In the afternoon, take your first soak in a local onsen, perhaps trying one of the area’s signature sand, steam, or mud baths. Beppu’s older districts like Kannawa are ideal for a wander, especially around dusk when the streets fill with drifting steam and the scent of sulphur.

    Day 3. Yufuin

Today you’ll take a scenic journey inland for a day trip to Yufuin, a tranquil, artsy town surrounded by hills and rice paddies. Spend time strolling through boutique-lined lanes, stopping for coffee and sweets at one of the town’s many independent cafés. You can walk around Lake Kinrin or visit a small contemporary art museum before relaxing in an outdoor bath with mountain views. Return to Beppu in the late afternoon for a second evening of hot spring bathing and a local dinner.

Day 4. Beppu → Kurokawa Onsen

Leave the coast behind this morning as you ascend into the central mountains to reach Kurokawa Onsen, one of Japan’s most atmospheric hot spring villages. Here the experience is all about slowing down. You’ll check into a traditional inn and spend the day soaking in outdoor baths nestled in forest or alongside rivers. The village itself is compact and walkable, and you can wander from bath to bath with a wooden pass, experiencing different styles of bathing throughout the afternoon. After dinner, enjoy a quiet evening wrapped in a yukata, wandering the softly lit streets under the stars.

    Day 5. Kurokawa Onsen

With two nights in Kurokawa, today lends itself to a scenic excursion to the Aso caldera. Drive or transfer across the highlands to explore one of the world’s largest volcanic basins. Depending on volcanic conditions, you may be able to approach the crater rim of Mount Nakadake, or you can admire the sweeping landscapes from the Daikanbo lookout point. There is time to enjoy a relaxed lunch at a countryside café or visit a local farm before returning to Kurokawa for another hot spring session in the evening.

    Section image

    Day 6. Kurokawa → Unzen

After breakfast, begin your journey westward, crossing to the Shimabara Peninsula to visit Shimabara Castle and explore the city’s charming carp-filled canals. Stroll through the preserved samurai district before continuing up into the hills to Unzen Onsen. Arrive in time to relax in the hot spring baths before enjoying a traditional multi-course dinner at your accommodation.

    Section image

    Day 7. Unzen → Ibusuki

Travel south today to the seaside town of Ibusuki, known for its unique style of bathing: the sunamushi, or volcanic sand bath. After arriving, you’ll have the chance to experience this local tradition for yourself by being gently buried in warm black sand before rinsing off in an ocean-view onsen. If time allows, visit the peaceful Chiran Samurai Residence Garden en route or stop briefly in Kagoshima for lunch overlooking the active Sakurajima volcano. Dinner and another soak await you in Ibusuki, where the warm sea air adds to the sense of relaxation.

    Section image

    Day 8. Ibusuki → Kirishima

This morning, head inland again to Kirishima, a hot spring region wrapped in forest and myth. The area is dotted with ancient shrines and volcanic trails, and has long been considered sacred. You may wish to visit Kirishima Shrine, nestled among tall cedars, or take a gentle hike along one of the crater trails of the Ebino Plateau. Spend the afternoon at your leisure, soaking in the healing sulphur-rich waters of your ryokan and enjoying the calm of the natural surroundings.

    Section image

    Day 9. Kirishima → Fukuoka

Today you’ll journey back to Fukuoka for your final night. Depending on your route and timing, you might stop along the way for a final countryside lunch or a brief visit to a local onsen town. Once back in the city, enjoy your last evening with a relaxed dinner and, if you wish, one final soak at a local sento or spa before turning in for the night.

    Day 10. Depart Fukuoka

After breakfast, transfer to the airport or train station for your onward journey. If time allows, you may wish to fit in some last-minute souvenir shopping or a visit to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine before leaving Kyushu behind feeling refreshed, rebalanced, and bathed in the spirit of the island.
